How do tree density and body size influence acoustic signals in Amazonian nurse frogs?

چکیده
The Acoustic Adaptation Hypothesis (AAH) predicts that acoustic signals emitted at sites with greater vegetation density should have spectral and temporal characteristics increase signal transmission, but there is a pleiotropism related to body size: large animals produce lower frequency. We used 238 advertisement calls of 34 populations Amazonian nurse frogs from two rainforests different test if tree influences the evolution parameters. PGLS for relationships between traits phenotypic, environmental geographic predictors. Spectral features an allometric relationship size. found novel quadratic note duration dominant frequency size direct effect indicates evolutionary trajectories follow general macro-evolutionary pattern as in birds. opposite those predicted by AAH; environments emit longer notes higher rates than denser-tree environments. Subtle differences forest types can drive diversification micro-evolutionary scales.

Do frogs communicate with seismic signals?
Male white-lipped frogs exhibit conspicuous behavioral responses to calling conspecific males that are nearby but out of view. Since the calls often are accompanied by strong seismic signals (thumps), and since the male white-lipped frog exhibits the most acute sensitivity to seismic stimuli yet observed in any animal, these animals may use seismic signals as well as auditory signals for intras...
متن کاملBiological invasions and the acoustic niche: the effect of bullfrog calls on the acoustic signals of white-banded tree frogs.
Invasive species are known to affect native species in a variety of ways, but the effect of acoustic invaders has not been examined previously. We simulated an invasion of the acoustic niche by exposing calling native male white-banded tree frogs (Hypsiboas albomarginatus) to recorded invasive American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) calls. In response, tree frogs immediately shifted calls t...

The purpose of this literature review was to determine the effect of healthcare work environments on nurse retention. The studies comprising this review describe factors that contribute to unhealthy work environments and implicate them as significant factors influencing nurse retention. The themes identified by nurses for purposes of retention included a desire for autonomy, empowerment, and de...

متن کاملTree spacing and area of competitive influence do not scale with tree size in an African rain forest
Questions: Is the area of influence of individual trees determined by tree size? Does competition, inferred from spatial pattern between neighbouring trees, affect adult tree spacing patterns in an tropical forest? At what size-class or stage is competition between neighbours most likely to affect adult tree spacing patterns? Location: Kibale National Park, western Uganda. Methods: Relationship...
